The Modernist Eye

Exhibiting Artist: Barbara McIlrath

September 28 – November 10, 2017
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 28, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

“I share with you my favorite places on the river.
Like a fisherman, armed with a tackle box
and a passion for being outdoors…
I try to outsmart a wild color or shape
before it slips away.”
– Barbara McIlrath
Inspired by the seasonal changes in the sky, land, and water along the Mississippi and near Lake Pepin, artist Barbara McIlrath is devoted to perceiving the world more deeply and revealing it to the viewer through her lush paintings using oil paint, bees wax, Belgian linen, pasted paper, graphite, and charcoal.

Specifically, McIlrath is drawn to and inspired by Frontenac State Park, the village of Old Frontenac (Florence Township Beach), and Hicks Valley near Pepin, Wisconsin. While working outside she uses her “modernist eye” to reveal simplified, improvisational interpretations of these special places. The resulting work can range from recognizable images of sky, land and water to completely abstract compositions discovered in the process of interpreting what is seen.

From the small, intimate drawings and paintings done “en plain aire” to the final large canvases completed in the studio the viewer will get a unique view into the artist’s process as well as a chance to savor the final product.
About the Artist:
Barbara McIlrath lives in St. Paul and works from her farm/studio in the dramatic landscape of the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin, near Lake Pepin, where the seasonal changes in the sky, land, and water constantly inspire her devotion to perceiving the world more deeply through painting and drawing.

Growing up just outside of Chicago, she earned her BA degree in Humanities at Illinois Wesleyan University, MS degree at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, and BFA degree at Minneapolis College of Art & Design, where she received the Vanderlip Award at graduation. She has worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, instructional designer for Mayo Clinic, corporate training consultant and faculty member at Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Atrium Gallery Hours:

Monday – Friday:  8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Saturday:  9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
