It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is upon us, which means the holiday shopping season is pretty much under way. Along with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, there are a few ways that you can support the local businesses in and around Minneapolis.
First, let’s talk about Plaid Friday
Plaid Friday is a national network of local businesses that band together to encourage consumers to support their local retailers during the busy holiday season. The idea originated in Oakland, CA in 2010 as an alternative to Black Friday, and Twin Cities Metro IBA brought it here in 2014.
All local businesses are invited to participate, and many do. And a lot of them have fun with it, with specials and promotions and the invitation for their patrons to wear plaid.
Plaid Friday is November 25, 2016 – the day after Thanksgiving. Participating stores are located all over the Twin Cities, and you can find out where they are on this map.
And for specifics on which store are involved, check out the Plaid Friday Twin Cities Facebook page.
Small Business Saturday
American Express introduced Small Business Saturday in 2010 as a way to help local businesses compete with the national, big box retailers and encourage people to support small, local businesses.
Since then, it has turned into an annual event.
Last year, 95 million consumers shopped small on Small Business Saturday, up 8.2 percent from 2014. In addition, U.S. consumers who were aware of Small Business Saturday spent $16.2 billion at local and independent businesses on the day. President Obama and elected officials in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., have championed Small Business Saturday in their local communities.
This year, many businesses again are participating in Small Business Saturday, which is on November 26.
St. Anthony Shopping Center, Minnesota’s oldest and first strip mall, will host a Small Business Saturday craft fair to promote local artists. Businesses in the strip mall will hold sales and promotions with food tastings and samplings.
It’s happening on Small Business Saturday from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. St. Anthony Shopping Center is located at 2900 Pentagon Dr., in St. Anthony.
Another Small Business Saturday celebration is happening at Vibrant Decor and Style on Small Business Saturday. They are holding a Holiday Open House from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. Shoppers will find great deals on home decor, fashion, jewelry and all sorts of holiday gifts.
